Adrian, Janick and Dave's guitars and Steve's basses

I didn’t realise that H also used foot pedals for synths in the 86 tour , that’s pretty neat

That makes total sense. Because I saw a video of Running Free from that tour and there was a random synth E chord during performance, specifically the singalong section. Never made sense to me, since he was playing the HSH non-midi Jackson. Now, it does.

Yup. Yngwie Malmsteen does the same thing to this day (different sounds though).
Rush were among the first (since 2112/AFTK) with 3 sets of Taurus pedals (2 at Ged's and 1 at Alex's setup) and midi controllers later (after Moving Pictures). They did that until 50 something tour, where they reduced number of feet controlers to 1, due to addition of Loren Gold. Sting was also a pedal user since early Police days and still is.

I don't know if it was on previous shows, but Adrian played his 50th Anniversary model on Aces High at the Alamodome show as well.

Great find, Thank you! I think this explains how they did SIASL live back in ´86. I’ve always wondered how H managed to play that rather busy riff with all those chord changes whilst maintaining the synth pad chord at the same time.

Roland has a hold function on the pedalboard. So, when he hit the first chord, he pressed the hold button and that chord sustained infinitely. That's also how Walking On Glass was done. Play a chord, hit hold and then solo over it.

The pedals were probably used for songs that required less synth, so they could be played without MIDI guitar. Like CSIT and SIASL.

I think the best example of Taurus pedal use might be the first pad of the beginning of HCW. Knowing Rush and Taurus sounds, that should be the pedals.

CSIT doesn't have any synth in it apart from the begining, which was always an intro tape (save for Steve and Nicko playing along to it), so there'd be no need for it in that song.

Well, on TFP tour, there was synth on it.

But yeah, on the original tour, there probably wasn't any.

Ok, I think I have an example.

SIASL: Intro riff is Taurus. Verse is guitar synth plus hold button. Chorus is Taurus again.

Walking On Glass is only guitar synth + hold function on Roland. HCW intro is Taurus. HCW chorus+ oh oh fills is guitar synth. Bells on Hallowed could also be Taurus, however Nicko might have still had real tubular bells on this tour.

Also the random synth E chords during Running Free sometimes are the Taurus (there are none in this version).

Speaking of synths and that stuff, I’m planning to buy a Boss SY1 pedal, is it worth it to do that kind of stuff (hold functions, SIT-ish tones and that kind of things)?

Great photos of some IM guitars. California series Strat and Cream FR Classic Strat from Dave, both old Lados and Destroyer from Adrian, Blackie, White Strat and White Spirit Strat from Janick.

Seems like the first guitar Andrew worked on is the California Series Strat in February 2023, followed by Cream FR Classic and the three Strats for Janick just before the beginning of TFP. Adrian's guitars were in the shop last year before the start of LOTB.

One interesting thing I gathered from these photos is that Janick's Blackie looks like a nitro finish, while the White Strat looks like polyurethane. Also, Janick doesn't only wear the finish on the back right of the guitar, he wore the wood too on all 3.

Shame we can't see the neck plates. That would explain a lot. Especially what the 2nd Hicks is. A production prototype, or just a CS Hicks-made backup. The 3rd is 0001 and the 4th is the maple one (they could be in different order, the only recognisable one is the original, due to the strap).

Edit... Scrap that. The 4th guitar in the rack is the one from the European tour and is not being played during the show (it has the Sgt. Pepper/Hendrix strap that was on the Les Paul last year and chrome strap locks). And there is the Dave signature. So, it's probably a production prototype, possibly serial 0000.
