The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 3, Matches 37-42

I'll echo pretty much what @Detective Beauregard said about Octavarium: it feels horribly derivative. Some goods songs, maybe, but not what I want from Dream Theater in almost any regard. The last three albums with Portnoy are among my least favorites from the band.

NIGHTWISH ALBUM RANKING GAME: #8 REVEALED

I also ranked this album second to last and for all the reasons you stated. Disc 2 is a throwaway. It's pretentious as hell. Marko is completely wasted on his final album with the band. Even his one solo lead vocal song is not good. Floor's power is completely wasted (again) as she spends most...

    Agreed, anime is lame.

    Dream Theater

I’m really hoping for a light album, honestly. I want some major key songs. I want silly, wacky keyboard motifs that feel like Reading Rainbow on steroids. Their best moments in recent years have all been the more uplifting ones and this seems like a good time for some joyful music from the...

I agree with these statements. And yet, I still voted for Ghost.

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 3, Matches 37-42

Mostly easy votes this time: Breaking The Law is a clear winner against Bodom. I don't always vote for Octavarium, but when I do it's up against 90's grunge rock. The only difficult match is Computer God vs. Square Hammer. On one hand, Computer God is an exceptional track that helped...

NIGHTWISH ALBUM RANKING GAME: #8 REVEALED

Angels Fall First has a few worthwhile moments, but it is a glorified demo. I ranked it dead last and I'm glad it has landed there. On the positive, the album has some worthwhile instrumentals that definitely inform what the band would become. Tarja sounds alright. The guitars are solid. This...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 3, Matches 37-42

Symphony X because bias and, oh yeah, it’s a million times better. Machine Head because anti-Tate bias and they won’t win anyway. Scorps because it’s jolly good fun and somehow less lame than HammerFall. Savatage because I like my cheese melted, not cold and evenly formed. Megadeth...

Don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here preparing my rage bunker for Symphony X’s inevitable loss to Twisted fucking Sister :turd:

    Judas Priest

Neither song is at the top of my list for Invincible Shield, but both would be better to hear live than Love Bites. What an absolute stinker that was last month.

JUDAS PRIEST ALBUM RANKING GAME: FINAL ENTRY AND RECAP

This world. And any other world where guitars exist. This is true, but it's not just their experimental tracks that weigh down the albums. Sometimes they just write stinkers. I wouldn't call all of their attempts at Queen-like anthems very experimental, they just suck. Also see: You Say Yes...

JUDAS PRIEST ALBUM RANKING GAME: FINAL ENTRY AND RECAP

Prepare your pitchforks, folks, cause here comes my hot take... Invincible Shield is a great album and easily a top five Judas Priest record. There is no bad song, it is incredibly solid all the way, and the worst song (Sons of Thunder) is still completely inoffensive in its mid-ness. As a...

The Greatest Metal Song Cup - Part II, Round 3, Matches 37-42

Powertrip has a fun groove and nice dynamics, but the vocals are pretty tired. Fun enough tune, though. Evil has far cooler music and, for once, King Diamond resides in (mostly) his least laughable range. Great riffs, though. It's a begrudging vote for Mercyful Fate, but it is still a vote...

That makes sense. They definitely have a bit of a "too cool for school" attitude (Brent especially).
