Monster, Amber, Feeling and Hands are all great, easily better than anything from Hardwired. The first riff on the title track is Hetfield brilliance, dirty and knarly yet rhythmically catchy. Regardless of opinions on sound, the drums are excellent. Shoot is dull though, and whilst Kid has some...

I like St. Anger alot actually, although I have to be in the right mood. It's the clearest example of the band using sound as sculpture rather than just writing rock songs. It's a usp. As a piece of art it's better than some of their others.

Absolutely. The other 3 thrashers, Kill, Ride and Justice, all have an edgy quality to their sound which keeps them fresh. Puppets has a cosseted, woolly atmosphere.

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

Hell is Home is great, the 2 note riff under the solo is fabulous minimalism. Close to You is an atmospheric favourite. Machine Man and Metal Messiah are good too. Actually, most of this is fine and enjoyable, superior to Jug. One On One's a bore though. I bought the digipak back in the day...

I saw them at Hammersmith the week before. I was fourth row back directly in front of Cliff. It was a bit of a shock when the news came through. I think all the replacements have been excellent, even better in some areas, but they lost a balance that Cliff's huge presence gave.

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

A friend pointed me toward Priest in '81. I said I thought they were gay and he assured me they weren't, so I got 'Unleashed' and was very happy. It's not that the homosexuality was strongly offputting as during the '70's there was plenty of gender bending going around which was considered hip...

    Metallica

I remember buying it on release day and it blew me away, and it continued to be favoured for a couple of decades, but nowadays it just sounds flat. Kill is thin but spikey and still refreshing to listen to. Ride is reverby but has an out-of-control atmosphere. Justice may be the most over...

    Metallica

I've finally come to the conclusion that Hardwired is alright. The odd thing about it is that it isn't odd at all. The songs are mainstream affairs. Hipster metal? All of the other albums, whether they're to your taste or not, were a bit of a shock at the time of release. The '80's were...

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

I quite liked Ripper Priest. Melody can get so dull that a dollop of noise can't sort. Sometimes the songs are too long in this era. They should've gone for short, sharp shock. Jug's okay. I don't get the love for Spires, the Ride The Lightning riff rip puts me off. Title track is great fun...

    Judas Priest

I'd lost touch with Priest in 1997 when looking through the cd racks and seeing Jugulator. Was it a cover band? The logo wasn't correct but I'd never seen those song titles before. I really enjoyed Jug at the time, a real shot in the arm of no nonsense metal(if a bit silly). I used to prefer...

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

I guess its a generational thing but to label this record as amongst HM's finest and Priest's best is a little insulting as it's a shallow affair. Separate out the Painkiller track as it's a bit special with forehead vein popping shrieks and almost telepathic solos. Still not top tier Priest...

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

After hearing the single Johnny B Goode, Ram It Down stayed in the shop, unwanted for two years, until one day, post-Painkiller and Nice Price offer, I plucked courage, paid up, took it home and attempted to ram it somewhere. I was pleasantly surprised. The guitars have a rawness which give...

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

It's Turdo! It blows! I've always liked Reckless and Locked In. The title and Cold have decent atmospheres, especially live. Hot For Love held some weird fascination back In the day. I'm being generous of course. PG and Property are THE WORST in their entire catalogue. Vile. I was over critical...

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

Defenders saw the summer turn fat and lazy, heading towards the inevitable fall, right in the middle of the record. The Bites/Eat/Heads trio is competent enough, but a few minutes ago we were listening the mini metal symphonies and now we're confronted with pop music. Night is nice, but no...

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

Vengeance was their best for me and they never reached these heights again. Defenders had a clumsy Def Leppard/US drum sound clogging up the mix, Turbo and Ram were cheese overload and Painkiller was infantile(in comparison). SFV hit a perfect balance between pop sensibility and rock...

What are the IM-related items that you've bought but never listen to/watch/use?

I've never used the shot glass and ring from Eddie's archive, original blue. I play the picture disc collection over the original '80's records as it's more fun.

Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

Your review is very much like I felt about it back in '81 except for Angels and Run which I always thought were great. I played this a month ago and it surprised me how well executed it was, and I wallowed in those steady beats. It'll never be No.1, but it's preferable to Firepower which doesn't...

Exactly how I feel although I'm only watching on YT. As always, thoroughly enjoy the show up to Fear when the fast forward starts. These 4 get skipped every time.
