Coronavirus

I think the whole Coronavirus thing has become the nail in the coffin of any shred of optimism I have about the state of humanity. It's just neutral or pessimistic now, optimism isn't an option.

Americans aren't banned from Ireland as we aren't in Schengen, there's been 3 flights last week from covid blackspot Texas and it's seems that there's groups of tourists out and about instead of self isolating for 2 weeks, so I expect phase 2 to kick off fairly soon.

Phase 1 was caused by Italian rugby fans being let in, so it seems no lesson has been learned.

That's really disappointing. Can't Ireland just ban Americans, like the rest of the world?

I'd imagine we can. Not sure if the political will to do so is there, especially as there's probably pressure being put on by the tourist industry.

I think it's pie in the sky stuff expecting tourists to self isolate for 2 weeks. Some trips won't even last two weeks, so there's no way any tourist is going to come all the way here and then stay in isolation. New Zealand escort visitors into isolation, you need to be doing something like that.

Loads of Americans claim to be Irish though, so that would be awkward.
Claiming to be Irish doesn't equal having a passport that says you're Irish, though.

If we can keep the Americans out - and we are - then Ireland can muster the desire to do so. Especially since if Ireland becomes a hotspot then people from the EU won't want to visit.

No ban from Croatia too.
But I think we're enforcing the 2 week rule. City is empty in comparison to usual tourist hordes.

Americans that we receive are partygoers and elderly. Parties are cancelled, group arrangements are cancelled. I don't think there's many Americans outside. Having said that there aren't many foreigners around, it is like pre-tourist boom clientèle, neighbours and other continental Europeans plus a non-European here and there. (statistics compiled in daily walk by languages heard)

I think they can get one if one grandparent was born in Ireland.
I'm looking into the Spanish one. Italy is fairly lax, as long as you can prove lineage. Haven't bothered looking into what I would need to prove though. Not really a priority atm since one can't even travel, much less work.
