Hi everyone. Right now I have 128 solos taken from this topic. To get to this number I counted all solos mentioned by forum members (only a max of 10 per person per guitarist) and removed a few from inactive users that were not mentioned by others.
Once again, thanks for all your submissions. Sorry to the ones who missed the boat (I'm thinking of e.g. mckindog, Perun and perhaps Brig and Sixes), but you'll see there's enough left to enjoy!

I'm going to ask what I feel is a "stupid question". I haven't been listening to Maiden long enough to have a vast knowledge, but when IM has as many as three guitarists on some albums, how exactly can I tell who performed what solo?
I know if I watched the song live, I could see the camera pan to a specific guitarist and that would make it more obvious, but is there a certain quality to each solo that lets you know who is playing it? Is there something in the credits that lists this?
I'm listening to itunes albums, so I don't have the original credit booklets.

You'll learn to distinguish the individual guitarists with time. It helps if you watch their live videos so you can which style belongs to which player - although some scrutiny is advised, because Jan takes over some of H's 80's solos nowadays - and that would be a starting point. Each guitarist has a very distinct style that you will learn to tell apart as you get more familiar with the music.

It is an abbreviation on his first name, because when spoken fast in the Cockney dialect, it sounds like H-rian.

You can identify each player & there solos by there style of playing.
People on this forum use various words to describe the playing styles of Dave, H, & Janick respectively.
Words like awesome, overrated, & butcher.
@22 The Avenue - you can listen, learn and appreciate. Or you can just cheat by going to ironmaidencommentary.com. If you look at the lyrics for individual songs, all the solos are attributed on there.

How many times have you seen someone refer to Janick's playing & mention the word "quirky"?
Here's what I go by mentally:
Dave is bluesy and improvisational. His solos are usually the most legato (smooth and unbroken from note to note).
Janick is chaotic and improvisational. Like Jimmy Page, his imprecise technique leads to many solos which are more about atmosphere than the perfect notes.
Adrian Smith is not improvisational; he writes his solos in advance, and performs them live with the least variation of all 3 guitarists. Thus, most H solos are noteworthy for having careful phrasing and clear melodies.
These will usually give a good guess. Also remember that on some albums (esp. live), the guitars are mixed to separate channels, and once you ID someone in the stereo spectrum you've got them tagged.
One very noteworthy solo that Janick has taken over live: Hallowed Be Thy Name, to oft-criticized results.

Yeah, but my experience at US shows is that those who aren't fanatics generally hate it.
Also, we may say that here now, but that was far from the consensus for a long time. "Oft-criticized" is very true.
