Orion. Better riffing. Better soloing. Cooler changes.
(As told earlier: the only thing that really stands out for me in Ktulu is the intro, the rest of the song is too lengthy and too much of the same to be too good for its opponent)

I have to be careful with what I'm saying here since I don't know the ages from all members, but it looks like -apart from Cornfed and Brig- that all the oldies (30- and 40- plus) are going for Orion. Ride is more popular with youger people. Just a coincidence, but still funny enough (imo) to notice this.

I may not be in your oldie club (fine, be that way, I didn't wanna join anyway harrumph!), but I prefer Master of Puppets as an album by far. Ktulu is just a better instrumental, IMO.

Hmm. I love both but Orion...

It's a good example of staying simplistic and melodic, yet heavy and complex. It's just such a NICE listen too..it has a nice sound all the way through. It flows so well. That lone organ-like bass intro...Amazing. Helps create that ethereal atmosphere to the track. The drums building in the background, until they're right at the front. Drums, Bass and Guitar riffs continuously weaving in and out of each other, in unison, then apart. And then a big break in the middle with a tasty bass solo and sweeping blues guitar :notworthy:...Yes, definitely Orion

I'm obviously old, but I'd say there's no connection there. Lightning is my favourite Metallica album, but Orion might be my favourite instrumental ever. Top three for sure.

Brig's gonna love you calling her an oldie...:devil2:

Completely right; age isn't relevant. This particular debate has been going since 1986. I argued for Orion vs my Ktulu-lovin' buddy back in the day. If most of the oldsters here are lining up one way, it's coincidence, though an interesting one.

And the debate lives on even within age groups. I've had plenty of MoP vs RtL/Orion vs Ktulu discussions among my friends. Can't say I've noticed any consistent patterns for preferences.

I used to think AJFA was better than both of them. Now I think RTL narrowly edges out AJFA, with MOP not too far behind.

AFJA is good but for me it's all about MOP and RTL. I think Justice is about when they went overboard and the actual songs started to get lost amongst a clutter of unrelated riffs and bloated songwriting. Don't get me wrong, AFJA is still great, but they're starting to show signs of problems that turn me off from later Metallica.

The biggest weakness of Justice is the production, and specifically the lack of bass. The only correct way to hear it is a good fan remix.
