It was an inexact science, but the match-ups are based on how well the bands did in the qualifiers and in the previous World Cup - Deep Purple did well in the first World Cup, Nightwish was a mediocre qualifier; Kiss did well in the first World Cup, Cream was a mediocre qualifier.
