Well, ladies and gentelmen, I've finally learned the answer to this age-old question. Yes, there is heaven, and today, I've spent nearly four hours up there.
As you probably can guess, the concert was amazing! From the first note of Motorhead's Ace of Spades through Dio's Rainbow in the Dark to Iron Maiden's final line of Run to the Hills. It was completely outlandish!
First 30 minutes were of Motorhead's performance, which more or less turned the crowd on. The music was bit to fast for my liking, or rather my mood, but it was good nevertheless.
Next came Dio, with almost full 60 minutes of music. FIrst few pieces were good, but when we heard the intro to Rainbow in the Dark, we went crazy! It was the first time of the night when I screamed at the top of my lungs.
When Dio finished, we all took a 30 minutes long break. I went to take a piss and bought some water ($3.25 for a 16 oz. bottle!)
Anyways, after I got back to my seat I saw the crew finished their work on the set. After that came darkness.
Suddenly, a large "666" appeared behind the scene and a loud voice could be heard.
Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred and sixty-six.
Intro to Number of the Beast" followed, and the crowd were ballistic!
Next came The Trooper. And the chorus where, again, I, along with the rest of the audience, screamed as hard as humanly possible
It was followed by two pieces that, although are great songs, aren't best choices for live performances. Die With Your Boots On and Revelations. There simply too few crowd participation part in them.
After that, the band played one of their best hits. Hallowed Be Thy Name. The lyrics were too fast for me to sing along, but the crowd didn't seem to mind. The effect was mind-blowing! One of the best moments of the evening.
Next was played their newest single, Wildest Dreams. I admit, I had my reservations after hearing it for the first time few weeks ago, but the song totally rocks live. It's one of those songs that seem to be written specifically for live audience.
Following Wildest Dreams was The Wicker Man. A great, fast-paced song that also is a great opener. It's an another example of a great live song with its chorus and latter "whoooo" part. I mena, you have to hear it to know what I'm talking about.
After this, came one of my personal favorites, The Clansman. I love studio and both versions. The lyrics are a great sing-along and chorus is breathtaking! "Freeeeeedooooom! Freeeeeedooooom!"
Played next, was The Clairvoyant, a song that starts slowly and then suddenyl explodes into a fury of metal. Another great moment happened as the chorus part started. Screaming
There's a time to live and a time to die
When it's time to meet the maker
There's a time to live but isn't it strange
That as soon as you're born you're dying
really gets your heart pumping. Pumping pure adrenaline.
Next song, was what I consider to be Maiden's biggest masterpiece. The stage went compeltely dark, except for a single light aimed at Bruce, who looks up to it, point a finger at it, and then it shuts off. We can hear him saying in a spooky voice "Fear of the Dark." And then the melodic intro starts. The crowd, at first quietly, but a moment later extremely loud starts humming the melody. Lighters (mine too) in hands and voices on the air. And the first stanza followed by the unforgettable refrain.
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's always there
I knew that it would be great, but I didn't expect this! Like my friend, who has seen them before said, FOTD is fucking unbelievable live! It truly is.
This was followed by Maiden's classic song with which they always close the set. Iron Maiden. Amazingly simple riffs, yet an amazingly great one. I love that song. Literally everyone knew the lyrics and the audience was actually louder than the sound system.
Alas, it ended.
Few unlucky who didn't know Maiden started to leave, when the silence was put to sleep by a fast-paced intro to 2 Minutes to Midnight. Then the chorus dominated by fans! Powerful light shot to the audience as the bass drum played the rhythm. No, you don't need to ask us twice! With the first line of the refrain, the whole arena shook as we sang it with Bruce.
Last, but definitely not least was Run to the Hills. I said it wasn't the least, because, in fact, it was the second best performance of the show, by both the idols and fans. Verses of refrain were sang so loudly by us, that I could barely hear the band in the background!
Run to the hills
Run for your life!
A live masterpiece!
This concluded my short review of the concert. Now, I will describe my experiences.
First of all, my custom-made T-shirt was a success. Quite a few people commented it with "dude, it's cool" or "dude, where did you get it?" I can't say it didn't bring a smile to my face. As if it wasn't there before... I mean, c'mon! It Maiden!
Second of all, this was a first real concert I attended. At first, I was bit stiff. But around the end of Dio's performance, your good and calm Nef transformed into this wild beast! I was jumping like crazy, shouting like a madman, thrusting my arms in the air like a psycho! It was wonderful!
I stood there for over 4 hours, shouted for 3. Near the end I was dead tired; my back was aching, I could barely stand the pain in my feet, my mouth was dry, my throat was sore, my arms were hurting from the fatigue, but I didn't cave in! I gave 100% till the very end of the concert!
No amount of beer, not amount of weed not any other substance can ever top this experience! I will impatiently look forward to the next tour. I will make sure to buy tickets as soon as they're available and the get into the pit.
God, this concert has awakened a beast hidden inside of me!
Anyways, enough of my rambling... Peace out and goodnight!
PS
It would have been 101% perfect if it wasn't for that fucking motherfucker behind me who kept shouting to Bruce to shut up and play. I fucking hate people like that.
God, I'm excited. It definitely is time for a cigarette.
