Slayer

He's a great drummer but the era he was with the band was not the best...But that was hardly his fault, just Slayer writing crappy tunes. If you isolate and look at his drumming, and not the tracks, his drumming on Diabolus in Musica is beast!! But I think didn't he suffer an injury? Would be more a question of can he return and play as well as Lombardo.

I might be biased because Lombardo is my favorite drummer ever. But seriously, I probably won't go to the concert if it's Araya, King and 2 hired guys. No matter how good Holt is (and he is a better guitarist than both King and Hannemann) and no matter how good the replacement drummer is (never listened to an album with Dette so I can't judge), it's not Slayer.

Well I hope so or they will loose all integrity - an integrity that has already been on the decline for years in my opinion.

I don't say it about many bands..but Slayer is one of those bands that has been saving for their pension for a number of years now and not much else at least that is how I see it...A band run by King and his managers/lawyers to earn him as much $$$ as possible..Treating the other band members like hired guns etc.

Fine by me as long as all 4 real members are in the band and as long as the music is good. Both things were in order until Jeff got bitten by a spider.

Yeah. He's also replacing Charlie Benante from Anthrax...on the same tour :p The only good that could come out of all this is Metallica firing Lars Ulrich to make way for Lombardo :p

Hey Night Prowler, I know you prefer the original Slayer line-up, but I have mighty respect for Gary Holt. His band Exodus should have had the same credits as the other big four. Time for The Big Five! Under difficult circumstances he kept the band going and now he's just helping out Slayer. He's great and has the same, if not more experience in the trash scene as Hanneman. A trash metal legend.

What is the likelihood of Hanneman returning? Maybe he doesn't even want to return, hasn't he been gone for like 2 years already? Kerry King obviously doesn't care WHO is in the band. I foresee this could be the end of the group within the next year or two...Maybe they should already have packed it up when Hanneman couldn't play anymore.

Also. This. This is the worst. The WORST freaking cover of a song ever  It is confirmation that Slayer can only play one sort of thing...

Well, as I said, he's a better guitarist than both King and Hannemann. It's just that it's not the same when members change in this band. It's not like Megadeth where lineups change every 2 years or so.

It's like if Dave Murray gets a mean form of arthritis and can't play guitar anymore...and Maiden just continues with Adrian and Janick or even worse pulls in some equally talented and respected dude - it still just won't be the same. And Maiden would even be lucky in that sense that they already have two guys that could cover it - they might not need to pull in an outside guy.

I'd probably have a lighter opinion if Lombardo left "to spend time with his family" or something. But he's getting kicked out because of money, which makes it infinitely worse.

Here's Lombardo's complete statement from his Facebook page:

Statement From Dave Lombardo Regarding Slayer Australian Tour 2013

I want to personally apologize to all of our fans in Australia who have bought tickets for the tour expecting to see me in my usual place on the drums.

So that you all know the truth, as of the end of the business day on February 14th, I was notified that I would not be drumming for the tour in Australia. I’m saddened, and to be honest I am shocked by the situation.

Last year, I discovered 90% of Slayer’s tour income was being deducted as expenses including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of dollars and leaving 10% or less to split amongst the four of us. In my opinion, this is not the way a band’s business should operate. I tried rectifying it by letting my band mates know, and Tom and I hired auditors to figure out what happened, but I was denied access to detailed information and the necessary back up documents.

I spent the Christmas and New Year holidays realizing I had toured all over the world in 2012, but yet, had not been paid (except a small advance) or provided a proper accounting for a full year's sweat and blood. On top of this, I was told that I would not be paid until I signed a long form contract which gave me no written assurance of how much or on what basis management would deduct commissions, nor did it provide me access to the financial budgets or records for review. It also forbade me to do interviews or make statements having to do with the band, in effect a gagging order.

Last Monday, I sat down with Kerry and Tom to rehearse for Australia and to propose a new business model that I felt was the best way forward for Slayer to confidently protect itself so we could do what we do best . . . play for the fans. Kerry made it clear he wasn’t interested in making changes and said if I wanted to argue the point, he would find another drummer. On Thursday, I arrived at rehearsals at 1 pm as scheduled, but Kerry did not show. Rather, at 6:24 pm I received an email from the lawyers saying I was being replaced for the Australian dates.

I remain hopeful that we can resolve our issues. But once again, I sincerely apologize to all of our fans in Australia who spent their money expecting to see the 3 of us original Slayer members.
I look forward to seeing you in the future.

Sincerely,
Dave Lombardo

You know what, I'm getting fucking tired of this. Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Queensryche and now Slayer. Being a metal band means nothing anymore.

I find this so absurd. The intolerance and impatience of the guy. And it makes King a suspect of having an interest in the other 90% of the shares.
