Overdub, does that mean that he literally made two different recordings? To me it sounds as if it's one recording, and some effect doubles it by itself, while playing.

Yes, two separate recordings I'd suggest. Just like with Dave's The Clairvoyant lead; overdub on album, effects (delay) live.
