Preconceptions about metal

For all those who boycott spiritless, money making music, you are to be commended. For all those who spread the word of great bands, you are to be commended and for all those who make passionate, powerful music that spits in the face of popular music... well I'm afraid I would just be repeating myself. I never really cared what people said about my music tastes. Let them generalise and let me enjoy it. What does it matter what people think of me...

One thing that annoys me about a lot of metallers actually is that they say "don't generalise our music" then generalise music that I listen to. I'm a big fan of dance music (drum n bass/jungle/techno/IDM/hip hop etc.) and the amount of people on metal forums who generalise it as lazy and untalented music really annoys me. A lot of metallers are quite hypocritical at times really.

By the way, this isn't aimed at anyone here in particular, it's just my thoughts that although a lot of people generalise metal, metallers generalise a lot of music as well. Luckily there's not too many people on here who do it.

On a similar note, am I the only one here who get annoyed with the attitude of superiority lots of metal fans show, the "it's a fact that there is nothing more amazing and intelligent than metal out there, and since I listen to metal surely I must be amazing and intelligent as well" stuff?

The entire "we must get more people into metal, because metal is the best and they only listen to popular music because media tells them to" attitude really gets on my nerves. Has it ever occured to them that maybe some people listen to popular music because they like it? You don't have to be a sheep who listens to whatever is on MTV just because you don't listen to metal. Besides pretty much any genre contains great stuff if you look behind last week's best-selling fashion plate.

Well, I can see where you're going but, as for me the majority of popular music is bland, predictable, boring and uninspired. If someone says they like what they hear on the radio, well, that's like eating crap because you don't where the fridge is. Out of the bands I have discovered, or would like to check out, none of them will get airplay. That's because they don't compromise. Ah well, that's just my two cents.

Very good post Shadow, and I agree completely. Especially that last sentence [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/headbang.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'headbang.gif\' /][!--endemo--] The drum & bass/rap music that is on MTV and the mainstream dance channels is absolutely appauling on the whole, whereas people like Shitmat, Scotch Egg, LTJ Bukem, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher... are actually doing very innovative and at times extremely complex music but are on the whole ignored by the mainstream music media.

Aphex Twin has done electronic dance music in timings like 4.5/4 and 9+5+4+5/8 often using notes and keys he created himself. People saying how much more intelligent, creative and innovative metal is compared to other genres need to try and open their minds a bit.

Also, plenty of younger people love pop because it's happy, fun music. What's wrong with that?

I'm sure a lot of people judge rap by the mainstream ones that sell loads similar to the way people judge metal by all the cookie cutter nu-metal ones. So as for good rappers, well I wouldn't know anything about it so I won't just make an uninformed judgement on it. Maybe someone here could give a list of some good rappers.

I think a lot of people "like" music because it is the only thing they know. They watch MTV and talk with their friends at school about something that is accesible. Isn't it what we all want, to be accepted by our peers? (except punks of course [!--emo&:p--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]) It is not really a matter of what we like or dislike, it is what is being forced upon us by our peers and the media.

Here we go again Conor. That's exactly the thing the Shadow was trying to deny. Hey, if there's a good pop song, like the one with the crazy frog, I like it because i just like how it sounds... not because MTV shoved it up my ass (i don't have MTV btw)

Note I said a lot of people, not everybody. I'm sure there are a lot of intelligent people out there like yourself Ace, that like that bastardised crap they are trying to sell us. Sure some of it may be good in small doses, but a lot of people are getting brainwashed by porno for videos and clever marketing gimmicks.

I guess people are entitled to like what they like, but I don't think I will ever be able to understand how people like My Hump by the Black Eyed Peas.

People buy it because they're too lazy to go out and find real music. It's easier to get CDs in Wallmart than it is too find some specialist shops for whatever genre you like. It's cheaper as well. After all, we are a race that values convenience over quality. Marketers have been exploiting this human flaw for quite a while you know.
