I greatly enjoy some Images and Words:

    1. Dream Theater, "Metropolis"
    2. Dream Theater, "Take The Time"
    3. Dream Theater, "Surrounded"

And then it's a big drop. The rest are the result of shuffling a playlist of 1700+ songs, all rated 5 stars. So basically a random sample of stuff I enjoy.

    4. Frank Zappa, "Hungry Freaks Daddy"
    5. Beatles, "With A Little Help From My Friends"
    6. Iron Maiden, "Transylvania"
    7. AC/DC, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"
    8. Iced Earth, "Pure Evil" (Alive In Athens)
    9. Van Halen, "She's The Woman"
    10. Dream Theater, "Fatal Tragedy"
    11. The Flower Kings, "Paradox Hotel" (Instant Delivery)
    12. Genesis, "The Knife"
    13. Iron Maiden, "Fear Of The Dark"
    14. Dream Theater, "Learning To Live"
    15. Genesis, "Firth Of Fifth"
    16. Iron Maiden, "The Number Of The Beast" (Live After Death)
    17. Kiss, "King Of The Night Time World"
    18. Dream Theater, "Learning To Live" (Live Scenes From New York)
    19. Dream Theater, "The Dance Of Eternity"
    20. Genesis, "The Musical Box" (Genesis Live)
    21. Jimi Hendrix, "Gypsy Eyes"
    22. Kiss, "Strutter" (Alive!)
    23. Rush, "Tom Sawyer" (R30)
    24. Transatlantic, "Duel With The Devil"
    24. The Who, "Overture" (Live At Leeds)

The playcount range from #4 to #25 is only 27 to 22 plays. Shuffling changes this up considerably. For instance, here are the 5 star songs sitting at 21 plays right now:

Dream Theater: Take Your Fingers From My Hair, In The Name Of God (studio and Live At Budokan), Strange Deja Vu, Beyond This Life, The Spirit Carries On
    Extreme: Cupid's Dead
The Flower Kings: Love Supreme (Instant Delivery)
Foo Fighters: I Should Have Known
    Genesis: The Lamia
    Guns N Roses: Yesterdays
    Judas Priest: Desert Plains
    Rush: Freewill (Exit Stage Left)
    U2: Gloria
The Who: A Quick One While He's Away (Live At Leeds), We're Not Gonna Take It

20 plays adds Sabbath, Dio and Metallica to the mix. Paschenfuckingdale is at 19 plays (but 9 more for Death on the Road version).

When I got my new laptop in January I found out that Windows doesn't save metadata (play counts etc.) so when you move your media library across to another computer the old play counts are lost. :( This meant that I had to start again with the play counts on my new laptop. However, last week when I was backing stuff up in preparation for moving to Windows 10 I came across a bit of software that backs up Windows Media Player metadata and writes it all to an xml file. So I installed it on my old and new laptops, moved the xml file from the old laptop and wrote a Python script to extract the play counts from both files, add the correct counts together (taking into account songs that have been added to my new laptop since I got it) and re-write the xml file with the total play counts. The software I downloaded allows you to restore the metadata from the xml file so I know have the updated play counts! :) This means I can update the top 25 list from last year!

So last December I got a Mac, and Itunes has not crashed yet. It did 4 times on my other computer causing me to lose my whole library.

    So here it is

    1. Tool - Eulogy (42)
    2. Iron Maiden - Speed of Light (40)
    3. Tool - Lateralus (36)
    4. Tool - Aenima (33)
    5. Tool - Disposition (30)
    6. Tool - Reflection (30)
    7. Tool - Parabola (26)
    8. Tool - Schism (22)
    9. Tool - Vicarious (22)
    10. Tool - Parabol (21)
    11. Tool - Ticks and Leeches (21)
    12. Tool - Stinkfist (20)
    13. Eagles - Life in the Fast Lane (19)
    14. Tool - Hooker With a Penis (18)
    15. Dream Theater - Acid Rain (Live) (17)
    16. Dream Theater - New Millenium (14)
    17. Tool - The Pot (14)
    18. Dream Theater - Just Let Me Breathe (Live) (13)
    19. Tool - The Grudge (13)
    20. Iron Maiden - Brave New World (12)
    21. Iron Maiden - Out of the Silent Planet (12)
    22. Machine Head - Ten Ton Hammer (12)
    23. Dream Theater - Beyond This Life (11)
    24. Tool - Intermission (11)
    25. Tool - Jambi (11)

I got into a bit of a Tool phase last spring, as you can probably see. The rest of the Iron Maiden songs start to come in around 10 plays, Speed of Light being the obvious exception. In a month If I redo this list, then the top 11 will only contain The Book of Souls.

It does if you move your appdata folder.

    Good decision!

Use iTunes, all the data is stored in a single file that's not in a hidden folder.

You've listened to The Red And The Black (from start to finish; is that how iTunes counts?) 40 times!?

    That's... that's too much.

I don't have iTunes, but on WMP I've only listened to one track more than 25 times. Admittedly the Played Count reset last year at some point, but still.

  17. Collin

Yep, start to finish. And I firmly believe that isn't enough. :p

  18. CriedWhenBrucieLeft

    CriedWhenBrucieLeft Ancient Mariner

That's a whole nine hours of just listening to that track. Speed of Light is on there twice too; in total it looks like 100+ listens. Phew! That's lots. Another eight/nine hours in fact...

  19. The Flash

The Flash Dennis Wilcock did 9/11

You either listen to music much more often than I do Collin, or you just don't have as much variety. Those are pretty crazy numbers for 1 year round of listening.

I don't use itunes but there's a really cool web app that compiles your most played albums based on Last FM scrobbles.

    http://www.tapmusic.net/

Obviously albums with more songs have an advantage, but it's somewhat accurate for me otherwise.
