Iron Maiden songs – a rough overview of their “live history”

    Introduction & dedication

I decided to make a “played live – overview” of all Maiden songs, basically to get an impression when a song was played but also to estimate how often (esp. in numbers of tours) it was played.

The idea is inspired by and dedicated to The Iron Maiden Commentary.
I used M.averick's huge tour- and bootleg commentary ( http://www.ironmaidencommentary.com ) as a source, and for the 2006 and 2007 concerts I used http://www.ead666.com (which were a great help for M.averick's work as well).

I decided to make “tour segments”. Every played song will have a reference to one or more of such segments.
I followed the Commentary and gathered all the pre-debut album gigs together.
From this period (1976-March 1980) there are not many bootlegs so it’s easier to see this period as one segment.

As you’ll notice it’s not as simple that some songs were played on tour A and on tour B. Some tracks were played only a few times, or more than a few times (but not the whole tour), or even only one time. I’ll try to specify this for every track when needed.

This is not meant to be a perfect work (which isn’t possible anyway, since we don’t have bootlegs of all the concerts), rather see this as a rough overview.

If you have any comments or questions, or want to report mistakes, feel free to post them in this topic.

    Tour segments:
    1. Before the release of the debut album (1976-March 1980)

Wow!  This is amazing, Forostar.  Thank you.  This will serve as a quick reference.

How long did it take you to compile all this information?
  3. Zare Colonel General

Great info there! I always searched troughout numerous bootleg pages on the IMC to check out when some songs were played.

It always reminds me of this : my favourite tracks from Killers, Seventh Son, No Prayer, Fear Of The Dark, X Factor and Virtual XI were never played  :(
  4. Forostar There's more to it than meets the eye...

Thanks, Genghis and also Zare. Do you two Croatians realize that "Loneliness.." might have been played in Zagreb?

More than a week I spent several hours on it per day. Now comes the torment of not looking at the 2008 setlist for half a year! I'm not sure if I'll be able to wait so long, before I'll see them live.
  5. Zare Colonel General

Runner in Zagreb? Hmm. Actually, as far as i know, bootleg from that show doesn't exist, so we can't check the setlist.

Couple of older dudes here were on the Belgrade show, both in 1984 and 1986. But they weren't in Zagreb. I could ask a question at our official Cro fan club, but i doubt they'll know anything, it's a younger bunch.

Heh, on the contrary, i'm patiently waiting for the first of February, so i can see the setlist. Is it going to be posted here on maidenfans?
  6. Genghis Khan Prowler

Speaking of which, I have noticed the same is true for me.  I enjoy every track off Powerslave except 'Back in the Village', especially the underestimated and never played 'Flash of the Blade' and 'The Duellists'.  The same is true with Brave New World.  The never played 'The Thin Line Between Love and Hate' and 'The Nomad' are two of my favourite songs off the album.  I even voted 'The Nomad' as my Top 7 on Lovro's thread.  Does anyone know why these two gems were left off the set list during the Brave New World Tour?

That would be an interesting statistic if evidence could be found to support it.  I hope they play this song during the upcoming tour.  It is my favourite off the SiT album.

Well, I have to wait two months.

I know what you mean.  I'm tempted to look, but do not want to because I remember how much more I enjoyed the last history tour when I did not know the set list.  Then when they play a gem I've never expected, like 'Murders in the Rue Morgue' I'll be exctatic.

@Zare: Big chance, but if people do it on this forum I hope they'll use spoiler tags.

    Seven days to go...
    Heaven only knows...
What will be the bread...for the Maiden set...

    One big epic tune..
    Not the one of Dune...
The mask is not for hire...will they bring the fire....?

No one wants to make Perun angry... again.  :)

    Nice.  :)

Thanks Forostar!  Very interesting time-line of songs.  It deserves to be on the IMC? :ok:

    You're welcome!

    I wouldn't mind that of course! ;)

  14. Onhell Mexican Revolutionary

    I don't get the numbers... "1,2,3" "12", "19,20" what is that?

And I'm pretty sure I heard Mother Russia when they came to Phoenix in the BNW tour...
  15. Genghis Khan Prowler

Each number corresponds to a tour name.  #20 is AMOLAD; #21 is Somewhere Back in Time, etc.
  16. Zare Colonel General

Small correction. #19 is AMOLAD, #20 is A Matter Of The Beast.

    Thanks, corrected!

I believe Killers was played at least once on the FOTD tour.
  20. Forostar There's more to it than meets the eye...

Are you talking about the Montreal gig? It's not that likely.

Just (re-)checked it, but I think this is stated wrong on the IMC bootleg site. Killers is mentioned instead of Tailgunner, but the picture of the bootleg mentions Tailgunner which is obviously the regular song from this tour.

A second bootleg of this gig also doesn't list Killers:

If anyone has an audiofile to prove me wrong, I am glad to hear it!
