Favorite bands

1. Iron Maiden
2. Dream Theater

#3 would be tough. There are a few contenders...
Genesis
Frank Zappa
Led Zeppelin

So that's my #3 - #5, but I'm not sure about the order.

In the 4.5 years since posting this, I have slightly refined things. Led Zep is definitely #5. Genesis and Zappa remain tied for #3-4.

The absolute leading 2:

1. Iron Maiden
2. Judas Priest

Candidates for the third place:

3. Midnight Oil / Bad Religion / Black Sabbath / Bruce Dickinson

This is really difficult because I love quite a lot of bands which have some amazing albums but also less interesting albums. Maiden and Priest had a few weaker ones, but the strong ones make up for it, so they easily stand above the other bands. I also love Rush and Helloween but relatively seen, I think The Oils, BR, Bruce and Sabbath had more consistent discographies. Rush and Helloween both had at least 5 lesser albums... and I am tempted to mention many more bands (e.g. 90s Iced Earth is excellent in my book)!
5 years later:

Nightwish is a band that has come back into my sight. Certainly a top act that I would rate about as high as (or even higher than) Iced Earth, Rush and Helloween these days.

01. Iron Maiden
02. Judas Priest
03-06. Bruce Dickinson / Black Sabbath / Bad Religion / Midnight Oil
07. Rush
08. Nightwish
09. Helloween
10. Iced Earth

If My Dying Bride's next album will be much to my liking, I think they could easily enter the top 10. I kinda forgot about them in relation to this topic.

Jethro Tull and Hawkwind are also doing well in the last years.

4 months later: A little earthquake. For the first time since I am into Maiden and Priest (early nineties), another band entered the top 2.

Bad Religion climbed two positions. So many fantastic songs. More than Priest.
