Best Band Ever: nomination thread

Do you want Best Keyboardist Game too?

I can't deduce from Judas' post if he nominated the guitarists from his top 7, or if any of these were nominated, but can Django Reinhardt be in the game?

He wasn't a player of the rock genre but surely an import figure for many to come. E.g.:

Many guitar players, and musicians, have expressed admiration for Django Reinhardt, or have cited him as a major influence. Jeff Beck has described Reinhardt as "By far the most astonishing guitar player ever..." and "...quite superhuman..."[40]

Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, both of whom lost fingers in accidents, were inspired by Reinhardt's example of becoming an accomplished guitar player/musician, despite his injuries. Jerry Garcia was quoted in June 1985 in Frets Magazine:

"His technique is awesome! Even today, nobody has really come to the state that he was playing at. As good as players are, they haven’t gotten to where he is. There's a lot of guys that play fast and a lot of guys that play clean, and the guitar has come a long way as far as speed and clarity go, but nobody plays with the whole fullness of expression that Django has. I mean, the combination of incredible speed – all the speed you could possibly want – but also the thing of every note have a specific personality. You don’t hear it. I really haven’t heard it anywhere but with Django".

  • "Django," an instrumental guitar piece by renowned blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa, is in his honour. The piece was influenced by the violin introduction of "Vous et Moi" (Blues et Mineur, 1942, Brussels), in which Reinhardt played the violin. Vous et Moi (You and Me) became the title of Bonamassa's sixth album, where the track first appeared in 2006. Slightly longer live versions appear on LIVE...From Nowhere in Particular (2009), and in DVD from his 4 May concert at Royal Albert Hall.
  • Camel's Andrew Latimer has talked of being influenced by Reinhardt.[41]

That was my list of nominations. True, Django was the odd man out (I know we were supposed to keep it rock-based), but I used the same reasoning - that is, he is still being named as a huge influence by many people in the rock and metal world. And it felt genuinely wrong to leave him out. Also, after his hand was fucked up (there was more to it than the fingers, if I remember correctly), he became one of the most respected guitarists anyway. How much more metal can you get?

Django decided to remain in Paris as the Nazis invaded. This could have very easily been a lethal mistake on his part, as he was 1) Romani, 2) handicapped, 3) openly playing a music style that was banned in Nazi Germany, and 4) a well known friend of blacks and Jews in the jazz community. Worse, he didn't even opt to lay low during the occupation: he stayed in full public view and continued to play jazz in big concert halls. But, in a colossal bit of irony, the Nazis decided not to bother him because many of them were fans of his. Hell, some even asked to be photographed with him, including higher ranking Nazis◊. So to clarify, Django Reinhardt, a handicapped gypsy jazz player who made no secret of what kind of friends he kept, was such a good guitarist that NAZIS DID NOT HAVE THE HEART TO KILL HIM.

They are not among my most beloved, so I didn't nominate them either, but I'm still kind of surprised nobody has mentioned or at least considered Steve Rothery or Allan Holdsworth.

Late to the nominations...its been a hell of a day.

Any chance of adding Andy La Roque ( King Diamond/Death) as the 101st guitarist or keep him on standby in case someone breaks a string?

Satchel from Steel Panther?
Piggy from Voivod?

I'll leave the obvious choices to other people, but just in case no one mentions them...
Steve Harris, John Myung, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, Marco Hietala, Les Claypool, Billy Sheehan...

Justin Chancellor - Tool
Krist Noveselic - Nirvana
Mike Inez - AiC
Mike Starr - AiC
Eddie Jackson - Queensryche

Markus Grosskopf (Helloween, most important metal bassist on the European continent)
Martin Turner (Wishbone Ash)
Rinus Gerritsen (Golden Earring)
Peter "Mars" Cowling (Pat Travers)
Chris Aylmer (Samson)
Jeffrey Hammond (Jethro Tull; I could mention 2 or 3 more Tull bassists, since they all added so much to the music! One or two of them are even better than Hammond, but since Hammond played on the more appealing albums I went for him; music counts too! ;--) )

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned :D

Geezer Butler
Billy Sheehan
Tony Levin
Bryan Beller
Sean Malone
Tony Choy

I guess Charles Mingus wouldn't be acceptable, since he was never, even remotely, rock.
