Format:
Phase 1: 100 songs are divided into 20 5-song groups. Each group will have 2 winners.
Phase 2: 40 winners are divided into 8 5-song groups. Each group will have 2 winners.
Phases 3-6: 16 winners will determine the final one, using a knockout system.
...36 rounds altogether.

Rules
Each round will last for 2 to 4 days.
Draw for the groups was semi-random - some groups are genre-based, some groups are mixed. No group has more than one song from one artist, or more than one cover of the same artist, or more than one song per user (myself excluded... I have too many songs in the game! :D).

Phase 1, Round 1:

Inevitable question that will come up (Brig brought it up in chat):

Is the idea to vote purely on the song as we hear it, or how it compares to the original?

My answer is: your choice, iryo :p My criteria will be a combination of both.

Like you, I think, if I participate, I'll use a combination of both. Personally, I feel there has to be some element of comparison with the original artist. Although, I'll have to go & listen to the original for a few of these, as I'm not that familiar with some of the tracks.

I just see how I like it and compare it with the opponents in the same group. That's the context.
That's your context; you're getting confused again! :p

What's the point in a specific "covers" battle if the whole element of them being covers is entirely forgotten? You're effectively just treating them as song vs. song; which is fine, but others will have the original in mind, especially if they are familiar with it.

Amorphis' cover of "Light My Fire" is just brilliant. Edguy did an excellent job of metalfying "Rock Me Amadeus", so that gets my vote too.

I dig the No Quarter cover a lot and Ensiferum did a great job of Battery (even though they did literally nothing new to it). The others are just hilarious.

I can't get into to Amorphis' Light My Fire at all  Which is a pity because I like what Amorphis I've heard and I like the original.
Crowbar were okay.
Voting for Edguy's Rock Me Amadeus, but then I had a soft spot for the original anyway.
Also voting for Ensiferum because they carry that one off well
Kalmah were decent, too, but Brigantium hath spoken.

How is that Amorphis track hard to get into? It's fun, not complicated. Just a funny version with grunt and Doors organ. :)

I get a big grin on my face when hear these heavy power chords over this tune.

Silly: having or showing a lack of common sense or judgement; absurd and foolish.

There's nothing foolish here. Can't see a lack of common sense or judgment either. It could be a little absurd. But I like that. E.g., I like Monty Python.
A certain kind of humour is what it might take! ;-P

Well, I like the original for what it is. :) This sounds like metalizing a song for the sake of it, and it just doesn't work for me. Again, I'd expected more from the combination of a band I like and a song I like.

Maybe you hold the original more sacred than I. I like it how an "untouched" classic can be metalized. It was made by a metal band, in a time when they did sound like that. It's really their style (apart from the organ).

Oh, I'm sure there'll be more metalized covers in this game that I will be voting for. :ok:

Light My Fire
Not better than the original which in itself isn't anything special anyway. Growls are too weak and monotone... instrumentally it's all fine though. However, they recorded another cover of this song later in their career which is way better.

No Quarter
Original is super boring. Cover is way better, thanks to its shorter length and lack of Robert Plant's whiny vocals... Unexpectedly voting for this one.

Rock Me Amadeus
Adds nothing to the amazing original song apart from Tobi's whining near the end. Meh.

Battery
Instrumentally probably just as good as the original, but vocals are weaker... wish Jari growled the entire song. Still, my favorite in this group, so voting for it obviously.

Skin O' My Teeth
Megadeth covers are hard to come by, this was probably the best. Instrumentally it's great, but manages to be weaker vocally... this guy's screaming is too thin so not surprised he switched to deeper grunts on later albums.
