I have only one comment:

OK I lied about the comment. The deviation here is insane. A near-9.00 all the way down to a mid-five. Way to go, Maidenfans.

Choice comments:

Dave didn´t get so good in his first composition. Its an okay song, quite different from the rest of the album. Paul vocals are very good as for the bass.
he intro is pretty bland, but then it becomes very intense, and one of the most enduring headbangers in the Maiden discography. Still the weakest song on the debut album, but that's not saying very much.
Cool rocker with some really good bluesy nods in the middle section.
I just flat-out dislike this song. It's not very memorable, its lyrics are silly, and Paul's voice annoys me. It's the complete opposite of Phantom of the Opera.
Happy and ordinary and not-so-special until the instrumental part kicks in. Then comes one of the best parts of whole album. Solos are furious, and verse / chorus after feel more energetic than on beginning of the song.
A mixed bag for me. Lyrics suck, but I love the opening, especially the bass, and there are solid riffs throughout. Song has a cool drive and a solid chorus. However, the soft section in the middle is awful, it only highlights the weak lyrics, and is something I would have expected of an AOR band from that period.
It's got an OK riff, but it sounds so happy for the content manner. Like Running Free, this is one of the closest songs Maiden wrote to "sex, drugs, and rock and roll". Had they continued to pursue this topic, we might never have had a Maidenfans.com.
Picks up the pace after Strange World. Not exactly great, and the lyrics aren't worthy of Maiden. Still, there is something about this song that I like.

123: Shadows of the Valley - The Book of Souls (Gers, Harris)
Average score: 7.15/10 Deviation: n/a
The Book of Souls 1/11

The first song into our list from the reunion era that isn't on Dance of Death, this little tune brings The Book of Souls into the countdown for the first time. It also means only five albums are yet to have a song enter the list. Not much to say on the stats on this one - it scored a happy 7.15 the first time out, good for 106 in its year, but since we roll rankings here, that 7.15 ends up slightly lower on the all-time rankings. Mixed rankings - some people think of it as very derivative, and others think it works very well. I think that's why this is the lowest-ranked track on the album.

Choice comments:

Another great track, it's definitely a grower, the only letdown part is the football chanting finale
And more amazing melodic guitars to open this one up! I love the Wasted Years feel to them. And I went insane when first hearing "listen closely to THE raven's call"!
Like "The Great Unknown", this one has a huge splash of AMOLAD flavour, and is a great little mini epic. The "woah-oh" section near the end really elevates the tension of the track, although the explosive solo which follows it could have done with being a bit longer. I'm not sure I would count this as being amongst the album's best numbers, but it is certainly not filler material, and it is very much a grower!
I think this is the weakest track on the album. Decent enough song, but not nearly on par with the rest of the album.
the whole song is a derivative mess. there are good parts to it, but they've done most of them before. really underwhelming
This song is one of the real highlights of the album for me. Aside from the Wasted Years similarities, the melody of the vocals at the very beginning of the song kinda reminds me of Isle of Avalon.
The more I listen to it the less I hear of Wasted Years in the intro and the more I hear of the chorus on this song. And I think the chorus here soars and is one of the albums very best. Great guitar melodies here as well, typical of a reunion era Gers penned track. Love this song.
Once again, Gers brings the riffs.
Worst song on the album... I call it Fillers Of The Valley.
It almost seems like a hybrid, like a mad scientist threw some previous Maiden songs together in a blender, and yet, it works, and works stupendously.

Average score: 7.19/10 Deviation: 0.34
Brave New World 1/10
Top 100: 2005, 2006

This is another track with very little variation over the year, with by far the smallest deviation yet. Maidenfans has firmly ensconced this in low-sevens territory since the dawn of time. Maverick, Gor, Perun's first account, and IronDuke agree with MrKnickerbocker, bearfan, Perun's second account, and Brigantium. Presumably, Forostar disagrees with everyone. Brave New World enters the list, and we have only four albums yet to show up. They are, in chronological order: Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and A Matter of Life and Death. Probably the four albums generally considered the greatest, at least on Maidenfans. Certainly they have the highest floors!

Choice comments:

I know this is neither one of Maiden's best songs, nor one of their most popular. However, it has always been one of my favourites. The score is intense; you can turn this on and just go nuts, unlike the more subtle and complicated pieces on the album.
This is the weakest and most forgettable song on the album. As always, the chorus is OK, but nothing special at all. It's not terrible, but it's just not that good either.
It is utterly forgetable, the weakest song on the album, nothing special.
I find the verses and the solos pretty OK, but even those parts are not top class. Bridges and choruses are really less good, with that too familiar sounding lead guitar (Wasted Years / The Clansman).
I wonder if Adrian had these riffs intended for a Bruce song as they sound a bit meaner than most Maiden tracks. The only thing I don't care for is Bruce's strained chorus.
Bruce performance is great, and I don't understand the criticism on the vocals. That, together with the lyrics, is a powerful combo. Bruce really developed himself as a vocalist during his solo career, and I hear inspiration from The Chemical Wedding on this one especially.
I like that arrogant, crunchy riff and the epic chorus. It's always quite uplifting to listen to this song
Some really cool lyrics here, and Adrian's riff is savage. However, the song is too short to be repetitious, which I tolerate much better on longer tracks.

121: When the River Runs Deep - The Book of Souls (Smith, Harris)
Average score: 7.20/10 Deviation: n/a
The Book of Souls 2/11

We return to The Book of Souls with the second song from that album. Only slightly ranked above Shadows of the Valley, this song still slots nicely in the acceptable zone. People are a little torn on this, atlghough several people noted that Bruce doesn't seem great. More than one person noted that this song likely suffers for being placed as a "breather" between two epic tracks, the somewhat-maligned The Red and the Black and the near-perfect The Book of Souls (this isn't my opinion, btw - that's a prequel for later).

Choice comments:

There's an old saying in classical music, about Beethoven's symphonies: his 4th is "a slender Greek maiden between two Norse gods", undeservedly ignored because the 3rd and 5th are so epic. This song is going to wind up the same way. It's a great song, but it's sandwiched between two significantly impressive epics.
For me, this is the weakest song on the album with a lack of powerful singing parts from Bruce. It has a No Prayer/Fear OT Dark vibe to it. I still enjoy enjoy though.
Maiden rarely make full throttle barnstormers these days, and whilst the frantic pace isn't kept up throughout the song, the slower chorus is a grower, and H's hypnotic solo elevates the song to higher plateau.
Not a huge fan of the vocals on this one but I actually like the chorus and the riffs are great. Love the pace and the Man on the Edge vibe. There's also something of a The Nomad thing going on at one point.
I LOVE the change of pace on the chorus! Really unexpected.... and very catch! I would like to see this one live...
This is a strange song. Whenever I hear it, I think it's the least special song on the album, somewhat akin to The Alchemist and The Pilgrim. But for some reason, it's the one that gets stuck in my head the most often when I'm not listening to any music. Even more than Empire.
I don't know if I'm in the minority here or not, but this song and the great unknown are my favorites so far. Very catchy with great flow.
I dont get all the people that continue to praise TOAC and then rips this songs and says it so bad. This song has much cooler riffs!
It's failed to grow on me, I'm afraid, but do like what they do with the chorus, it's such a contrast to the pace of the rest of the song.
So, I took a break from TBoS and was driving around with the library on shuffle.
This song comes on out of the blue and I don't immediately recognize it outside the context of the album.
It sounded the best ive heard it.
Maybe it's a sign that I don't like it much on the album because the other songs are so good.

Damn. I was not expecting to see Shadows so soon. Certainly not as the worst from Book of Souls; in fact I have it as the 4th best from the album.

Invaders should have been higher, but I guess I can see where people are coming from. Actually, a while back I thought it was the weakest song on the album... then I listened to it again and was, "What was I thinking? This is great!" But oh well.

the somewhat-maligned The Red and the Black and the near-perfect The Book of Souls (this isn't my opinion, btw - that's a prequel for later).
Funny because I actually love TRATB and don't find TBOS as endearing as others do. :p

Actually my thing with When The River Runs Deep was the fact that I was expecting something more along the lines of When The Wild Wind Blows, and was taken off guard when I actually heard it. I probably need to give it another listen in the future and see what I think of it now.

The red and the black has some awesome parts. Problem is, it has the most embarrassing, unlistenable parts of any Maiden song ...ever. Parts of this song are like fingers on a chalkboard. Then it also is completely a welded together mash of sounds that never get a real flow. In my opinion it would have been the second song to come off the board here, only ahead of bydtts.
Anyone who doesn't like gates of tomorrow, should hate tratb. It takes the worst parts of "gates" ( which is a much much better song than tratb) and drags it on longer, then in attempt to change the song up, I guess, adds on about ten extra minutes of scrap material, some parts better than others. I cannot fathom the love for this mistake of a song.
My lowest rated song off Dance of Death, journeyman, I have 80 spots ahead of tratb. Go figure. Ok onward and upward...

To really get TRatB you have to hear it live. Then its brilliance becomes evident. Great, great song. What a ride it is.

Well, he's sick right now and cant sing so.
So what? That video is from nearly two years ago. He was drunk and had no excuse. He doesn't remember the words to the songs.
T126: Look For the Truth - The X Factor (Bayley, Gers, Harris)

Welcome to The X Factor, as it arrives in our countdown with this song, maligned by many for the "Oooh ooh ooh!" part
This is my favourite quote about 'Look for the Truth' from the 2013 survivor:

Hoopppppoo hooo hoooo. Hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoooooooo.

That video is from an official DVD Paul recorded. Not the subtitles. But the actual video. That's how Paul sings when he knows it's going to be recorded for posterity.

My point was more along the lines of 'why kick someone when they are down', I get he's no Bruce but I don't think he ever aspired to that..
